One of the most powerful things we can do is share our stories. As time passes on, we recognize how positive, uplifting stories motivate and help others along their
unique and extraordinary paths. Everyone has an extraordinary story to develop, experience, and share. This is my story a ride that started when I entered the world in
McClain, MS. I had no idea my ride would yield such fantastic experiences. I believe it did because I opened myself to the possibilities and ignored the naysayers and
those who had little faith along the way. My father always told me, Ruthie, life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you respond to it
I believe that hard work and dedication will lead to the fulfillment of our dreams, no matter what anyone may tell you.
I lived and practiced this principle on my journey and it took me places I never dreamed of, nor ever thought of as a possibility for me or any of my nineteen brothers and sisters.
When I returned to the White House again after our second Olympic Gold medal and basketball championship,
I had nurtured my talents and it led to positive rewards. We must invest in our dreams and sometimes that is not easy or comfortable.
True, life happens. But you must always remember that you are the director in chief of your life outcomes.
My father always reminded us that with God all things are possible. He would always say, “If you take with you in life just a few principles,
you don’t have to carry a suitcase full of rules.” But, I learned that without faith, perseverance, dedication, commitment, self-discipline and hard work,
some possibilities remain tucked away like an unopened present in your closet.
This book combines elements of my life story with the positive advice I give youngsters in an effort to motivate them to work hard and achieve the best for themselves.
The book is designed to help youth develop a solid foundation, positive self-esteem, confidence, and a strong work ethic. Some youth may not come from loving, two-parent
homes and may hang out with the wrong crowds on the street. This book is designed to help them make more positive choices and achieve their own dreams instead of
falling prey to negative peer pressures. I tell my story to let them see the things I had to overcome on my journey, emphasizing the great foundation I received from my father
and how his advice enable me to never give up, to persevere even when things looked bleak.
